Oppo: Off-topic or Not?

There’s no need to apologize for “off-topic” posts. I’m not talking about a certain person or event, but I’m sure we’ve all seen someone saying something along the lines of “sorry for being off-topic.” Today, I saw a link to the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and read it again. Here’s a small excerpt.

OppositeLock is an off topic forum for everyone that happens to have a very obvious and intentional leaning toward subjects focused mainly on all things automotive, mechanical and generally of interest to folks who love all manner of contraptions that move. However, that doesn’t limit us to only those topics . We’re all humans here. We have lives, we will probably talk about them in detail.

Emphasis mine. So yeah. Oppo is off topic. I’m not saying let’s all talk about random stuff like Kim Kardashian potentially being FLOTUS though. I’m just saying while we all like cars to some degree or another, we don’t have to talk strictly just only cars. I’ve been told by some people (who weren’t mods) that Oppo is a car forum and thus we only talk about cars, but that’s not entirely true.

Anyway, Gamecat wrote the handbook and touched upon this subject far more eloquently than I did, so I suggest the naysayers go !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

California for your time. Keep Oppo awesome.

The only reason I keep my posts as car-related as possible is for one reason. Oppo’s my escape.

I made it a personal rule that no matter what, I would never discuss current events, politics, religion, etc. I came here to get away from those things, not be reminded of them.

Now, does that mean I’ll tell people they’re wrong for posting that stuff? No, absolutely not, they have got every right to post stuff like that. I’ll also admit, when it comes to a topic or politic I either know a lot about/have personal experience with/can offer a different viewpoint on, I’ll join in the discussion. But those are exceptions not rules.

I came here to Oppo for many reasons, one of which was to shoot the shit with guys about cars, the last thing I want to do is discuss other things I really don’t want to discuss. Other people can do that, it’s not what my personal preference is though.

I guess the long and short of what I’m trying to say is, cars first, personal and political stuff last. I want to bring unique perspective on my hobby, not instigate political wars or air my dirty laundry.

I’ve been lurking here before becoming an approved commenter. I don’t really see any super “therapist” type stuff. I mean, there’s Miss Mercedes and her transgender stuff, but she seems to have a strong following in this community, so that’s awesome. And some others like Denver and Detroit..

Also, looks like some users (including her) have disappeared?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying cars need to be moved to a lower priority, or that we go all out and debate about the next president, or whatever, I just wanted to tell others who thought Oppo was just about talking cars that it’s not. Yes, we are all here because we like cars, and Oppo exists because cars exist, but we don’t only have to talk about cars, even though we are here for cars.

Off-topic doesn’t always mean touchy subjects like politics, religion, etc. There are posts about tech, photography, animals, all kinds of things. Those aren’t about cars, but they are accepted here. I just didn’t want people to feel scared about posting non-car stuff.

And as I said in the OP, once someone got upset that I posted something non-car related once. I don’t remember the situation, but I know it wasn’t a controversial subject. I don’t actively try to post that stuff either. Seeing the link to the handbook and reading it again reminded me of that event, so I posted this.
